New to the UK? 999 is free from any phone, including mobiles with no credit. You will be asked which service you need (police, fire, or ambulance). If you’re unsure, the operator will help direct you. 111 is the number to call when you need medical advice but it’s not an emergency — they can also book urgent GP appointments.

Tip: If you can’t get a GP appointment quickly, the Walk-In Centre on Broad Lane accepts anyone without an appointment or registration. NHS 111 can also book same-day urgent GP slots.

Most pharmacies can provide advice and sell over-the-counter medication without a prescription. Pharmacists can also treat minor illnesses (earaches, skin rashes, UTIs) through the NHS Pharmacy First scheme — no GP appointment needed.

Dental
NHS dental care requires registration with a dental practice. Finding an NHS dentist accepting new patients can be difficult — call practices directly or check nhs.uk/find-a-dentist.
Private dental practices are more widely available and typically offer faster appointments.
